The cost of waiting

Start at birth with $200 a month. If it grows 7% a year, that's about $86,000 by age 18. Start the same plan at age 10 and it's about $26,000.

It's never too late to start. It's just expensive to wait.

What to expect

  1. 1

    The intro call

    Five minutes, by phone.

This call is to get a general idea of what you're looking for, and to make sure we can help. You might be saving for private or alternative schooling, college, a trade program, or seed money for your child's first business. The plan works for all of them.

Assuming we want to work together, we collect the $200 fee by card, check, or cash. Then we schedule the first meeting.

    Have ready
A rough idea of what you're looking to fund.
    You leave with
A yes or no on whether we can help, and the first meeting booked.
  2. 2

    The first meeting

45 minutes. At your kitchen table or on Zoom.

This is where we figure out how much you need to set aside. We count what you have already saved and what you can comfortably put away each month or each year. We also talk through your potential investment strategy and the risks that come with the different strategies.

We also go over the accounts that can hold the money. That means a 529, a prepaid tuition plan, a UTMA, a Trump Account, or a trust. Each one has pros and cons. We'll go over them with you.

We talk about gifting and financial aid too. When grandparents or extended family want to give large amounts, we help you plan the gift so it does not set off gift tax or hurt financial aid.

    Have ready
Statements for anything already saved for your child, the school or program you have in mind, and a sense of what your budget can handle.
    You leave with
Your number, what's already covered, a clear picture of the accounts, and the second meeting on the calendar.
  3. 3

    The second meeting

45 minutes, within a week of the first. At your kitchen table or on Zoom.

We go over your time horizon and the strategy we selected for you, with alternatives to choose from.

You'll be told which account is best for you. Then David sits with you and helps you open it. The account is in your name. The first deposit goes in and the investments are set before we're done.

    Have ready
Your questions. We'll tell you before the meeting exactly what the account opening needs.
    You leave with
The account open and funded, the investments set, and a monthly amount to save.

No ongoing fees. The $200 is the only fee. Tetra does not charge anything on the accounts, now or later.

And if you get to the end and don't think it was worth the $200, tell David. You get it back. No questions asked.
